It's a sad commentary on human history that through the ages, violence has been granted more importance than beauty. In the Middle East a couple of millenia ago, more valuable than even gold was the metal of war -- iron. Even the smelting of it was a tightly controlled state secret.
It is not unthinkable to suppose that, according to the government of the time, nobody got free nails. Not even the ones used to nail your son to the cross.
