Fixion

book, nails, wood, relics
2005

I don’t for a minute believe that hate is a legitimate religion, but who gets to say what is legit?  What is the difference between real and phony religion?  What does it feel like to have your religious book denigrated?  With this sculpture I’m trying to illuminate that inquiry, not to condemn, or even satirize, as others of my sculptures did, but to simply ask these questions.

The title, “Fixion” is at once: 1) the fix to a problem, perhaps even a “final solution”, 2) a reference to the crucifixion, and 3) a comment on the content of the “religion” the book refers to.  Could my own religion stand the same criticisms?

Well, yes.  It could.  And therein, I believe, lies the difference.
